April 4 is A Mother Language Day in Georgia. This day has been established since 1990 to commemorate the events of 1978. On April 14, 1978, the demonstrations took place in Tbilisi in response to an attempt by the Georgian Communist Party to change the constitutional status of the Georgian language.
In 1978, the Soviet authorities decided to deprive the union republics of the status of the state language for the local language. Only Russian remained the state language of the USSR.
The Kremlin's initiative was followed by massive protests in Tbilisi, and for the first time in the history of the Soviet Union, the communist regime retreated. Since that day, April 14 has been declared the Day of the Mother Language
Georgian is the state language of Georgia. More than 5 million people speak this language. Happy Mother Language Day Georgia!
