The Trial of Columbus – Hero or Criminal?

An Innovative Interactive Learning Model to Foster Critical Thinking

“The Trial of Columbus” is a groundbreaking educational initiative designed to cultivate critical thinking by engaging students in a comprehensive, hands-on exploration of history. Through this project, students develop key skills in research, analysis, public speaking, and argumentation.

Participants independently explore a range of historical sources — including letters written by Columbus, journals from his expedition members, and other primary documents. They translate texts, craft speeches, and prepare for a simulated court trial conducted in the mock courtroom of the University of Georgia, adhering to formal legal procedures.

The project culminates in a full-scale mock trial, where students take on the roles of both prosecution and defense, presenting their evidence and arguments before a jury. The jury then delivers a verdict: was Christopher Columbus a heroic explorer or a criminal in the context of justice?

This immersive learning experience not only captures students’ interest, but also enhances their ability to think critically, take responsibility, and approach historical narratives from multiple perspectives.
